What is the

New England Rail Trail?

The New England Rail Trail is a project that will convert the 103km abandoned rail corridor between Armidale and Glen Innes into a multi use pathway, for non motorised outdoor recreation activities including running, walking, and cycling. The proposed New England Rail Trail, once established, will enhance tourism, community well-being and economic development in the region.

Accessible fitness

Creating Tourism Opportunities for our Community

Former rail lines like the corridor north of Armidale have gentle grades which make them accessible for a range of fitness levels and all abilities users. Railway enthusiasts will find this trail memorable as railroad infrastructure is valued and will be preserved. The scenic routes on the rail trail meander through the Northern Tablelands high country, connecting communities and offering opportunities to explore local history, landscapes and community businesses. With the introduction of the New England Rail Trail the region’s appeal as a tourist destination will be enhanced dramatically.

Oh, the places you’ll go

The New England Rail Trail Route

The proposed trail will link Armidale, the northernmost functioning railway station on the Great Northern Line to Glen Innes. On this 103km trail you will pass through charming villages and thriving rural communities. It will be a unique way to experience the New England as it takes you off the beaten track, over Ben Lomond mountain, through countryside normal traffic can’t access.

Why do we need the

New England Rail Trail?

Several Business Case studies and Development plans have been undertaken to establish the viability and benefits of the project, along with Risk Assessments, Implementation Plans and Bio Security assessments. Rural and Regional communities have flourished with the development of rail trails allowing not only business growth and development but an enhanced social aspect for people to live, explore and travel. This development links towns with increased trade, and an overall landscape of economic growth. The creation of The New England Rail Trail will maintain the integrity of the historic railway infrastructure which is so well preserved in this region, allowing current communities and visitors to preserve their stories for generations to come. The rail trail will preserve the corridor as a continuous community asset leaving it available should transport needs change in the distant future.
